I've been contemplating on getting one so I get some extra disk space. I remember on the old Tyrannozaurus forum, I was told there was a size limit to what my Z (sl-5600) can support.

Can anyone help me figure out what I should be looking out for?

Thanks a lot.

EDIT:
Clarification, Compact Flash Memory Cards. NOT Microdisks.

If you get an SD card, you are limited to 1 GB. Angstrom MIGHT support larger capacities/SDHC cards. It does on the clamshell models, but I have no idea if the SL-5x00 models are in the same boat.

For CF cards, you're not limited at all.

If you mean a CF (compact

If you mean a CF (compact flash) card, I can say that my sl5500 handles 1 gig cards just fine, and I also have a 2 gig CF card that works as well, using Sharp ROM 2.38.

but what's more important to me is the loading time. I prefer using 512 MB cards as they take less time to insert and eject on the 5500.

I keep lots of backups and ipks around which is easier for me than having to find things that might have retired off the web.

And also very important to get a brand you can trust. Don't scrimp on something that might be a lemon or counterfeit.

I do well with Lexar and Sandisk CF cards. Had bad experiences with an off brand that I wrote up on my blog:

My blog seems to be the only one at wordpress using that tag, but you may also want to read the other posts about SD card issues as well.

I mean compact flash memory cards, not the micro disks (I doubt microdisks work on the Z anyway). I always thought I read somewhere the sl-5600 can only take 2 GB compact flash cards at maximum, but I have tried to search for resources and have come up with nothing.

Loading time is not much of a concern to me, at least I don't think it will be.

All I do know is that it has a limited life span and I plan to put in files that I want to store for good on my Z.

Any help and info is appreciated.

Hmm, about that limited life

Hmm, about that limited life span, it's huge. I have files on the original CF cards I got about three years ago that are still quite readable.

Just having files sit shouldn't be an issue, it's if you read them trillions of times that maybe something will wear out. But even the Z wears out and you have to make backups on an external media, huh? I mean, once you do any geeky things or just install a wrong package, files can get really messed up and having no backups is not wise.

http://sdjf.wordpress.com/2008/01/11/backups

Permanent is a very relative term. At some point, you run out of space. I sure do, ending up with less than 500k on both Z's and I am constantly struggling to decide what I can remove from the Z.

For me, where to put files is a function of how fast I want them to load and how easy I want to access them. I have a main SD card, and another one just for pages saved with Opera. CF cards each have their own division of labor...it gets too hard otherwise for me to know where to find things.

Right now, the Z does not

Right now, the Z does not have a lot of data on it, but I do use it for something like playing mp3s and I only have a 64 mb SD card to cover such a small memory capacity of the Z. I'd like to treat my CF card like a cassette tape where I slap one set of songs in it and take it on the go.

If the capacity is more than 2 GB I will find something to fill that up with for storage. Maybe store away some of those mpeg1 videos I have that I don't want sitting in my hdd. Much of what I do with the Z has always been limited by the fact that I don't really have a lot of things on it safe a wireless lan CF card (which I barely use) and the SD card that's too small.

So, I'm wondering. I need to be looking at brands of CF cards, but I'm concerned about incompatibilities. I don't want to buy something my Z can't do anything about.

By the way, thanks for the links sdjf, I'll go through them during the weekend. Also, about tinkering with the Z, I'm keeping that on check. I have set my Z the way I want it, so I'm not looking to tweak it and accidentally break it.

Drat! I just wrote a long reply that disappeared into the ethers of lynx's back button. Ah well.

Please plan on making an external backup when you can, anyhow, to guard against unexpected problems such as power supply issues that can wipe out files.

As far as backup goes, I save most of the IPKs and data that I bring or install on the Z in my external hdd (that is, before I move them to the Z), so I think I have a good profile of where everything is.

Hullo folks.

So I decided splurge on a compact flash card... Sandisk SDCFB1024800. Turns out it's a type 1 card and I can't cancel it anymore (it's shipping as we speak). I'm wondering if there are any options for me to use it on my Z or should I just use it elsewhere.

I thought I'd update this thread one last time. The CF card is here and it works great on my Z. It's working really well and there's a lot of space to load up mp3s. :)
