Hey,

I'm alive, and will start popping in here on a more regular basis. I'll get to all the posts/messeges, etc eventually. Sorry for the disappearing act. It's a long story.

There's a new Sharp out (thanks for the email Walub):

It looks very much like the Z we have always wanted... but alas it's running the dreaded Vista. Maybe someone could get Ubuntu running on it.

Thoughts on this nice beasty?

Welcome Back!

My thoughts are:

Too long, thick and expensive! It makes the SL-6000 look small and thin!
Vista = Yuck!

Next to zero chance that Sharp will release this outside of Japan.

Two Thumbs down!

Hey, you're back and alive! Hope all is well and may the lust for gadgets be with you as ever!

There are still a lot of new and fun things going on in the zaurus-land. You may need some time to ketch-up. ;)

As for the new Sharp monster, the most crucial factor is the price, and probably simlock as well. We generally are having a very high opinion and expectation of Sharp's (new) machines. But if this one is going the typical UMPC line, then the community's enthusiasm about it may not turn out to be so big. It's always more fun to get the most out of the least. Many, I for one, simply cannot afford the luxury to intensively tweak/hack/mod/break (into) a luxurious device.
Of course in the ideal world the price is no overkill.

I am also beginning to feel that the Zaurus is getting older and older. Right now I am seriously researching the possibility of migrating to a MDA pro (i.e. European rebranded HTC Universal/i-mate Jasjar/Dopod 900, etc. ...). Mr. Titchy is now giving us another shockwave of surprise by creating phone & sms programs under debian eabi! The hardware specs really seem to be what the next *connected* Zaurus should be: bt, wifi, IR, USB, tri-band GSM, GPRS, UMTS... all in one kitchen sink with very similar form factors and clamshell design and the C-series, plus a faster CPU (PXA270 520 mHz with the same armv5te instruction sets). Very soon I am also going to perform a comprehensive 'plastic surgery' by transplanting all the components to a new black O2 XDA Exec housing.

Glad You're Back Antikx!

@Antikx,

Was beginning to wonder about you, Antikx....

Glad to hear you are alive and well....

Now, if we could just find ol' Meanie, we'd be all set....

;-)

As for the new Sharp D4, think it's nice piece of hardware design, and with Linux on it, it might be pretty nice....

Price is another story, as it will sell much cheaper in Japan as people will buy it from cell provider on contracts so price is subsidized by that....gray market imports will be at much higher price, from about $1300 - $1500....

@Jon_J,

As for HTC Uni, I got mine last week, very nice bit of hardware, but have to keep in mind that as of right now, there are various compromises on it too just different ones than the Zaurus....

1) there's no way that I know of to flash a HTC Uni, so, makes for a bit of a nuisance to shut it down and restart as you need to go through WinMobile to do it....

2) there's no internal hard drive, all storage is on SD Card...

3) AFAIK, there's no support on the USB port for other devices, ethernet, storage, etc...not being able to connect via ethernet for me is a drag as I don't always have WiFi where I am...Yes, you can do USB networking/ethernet connection by connecting to another computer, but that's a bit of a drag too....

So, don't get me wrong, it is a very piece of hardware overall, but does have its own compromises....

Hopefully, Titchy Mobile will get further developed and I'll feel better about it.... ;-)
