I wonder what is the best way to edit config files? I would like to edit
/home/etc/inetd.conf in order to enable the ftp server.

Your favorite text editor is the way to go in many if not most cases. Many/most config files don't have a GUI to edit them from.

On Sharp ROMs, the built-in command line editor is "vi".

You should first make a backup copy of the file, in case your editing messes something up:

cp -p /home/etc/inetd.conf /home/etc/inetd.conf.bak

and then use vi:

vi /home/etc/inetd.conf

Do you know how to use vi? If you don't know how to use it, check out my Linux Newbie resources page:

http://sdjf.esmartdesign.com/new.html

A quick guide to vi is at:

Oh, if you want to know how to make the Zaurus an ftp server, that is a different question. I don't know, but one of the how to guides mentioned in my blog should have some good hints.

Did you try googling for the following?

zaurus ftp-server

Are you sure you want ftp and not ssh? There's no security in ftp, passwords alone afford only minimal protection from hackers.

What shell program are you talking about? You do have a console, don't you?

Please, what ROM do you have? The Sharp ROMs have the Bash Shell built in!

You never really explained your problem.

Oh, you have to install it! You have several to choose from.

Here's the scoop (written up for just such times when I'm busy and need to share info) ;)

http://sdjf.esmartdesign.com/tutorial.html

It links to a number of various consoles you can try that I know work on our rom (which is really 2.38 I think).

Ok, now that I have the terminal installed I would like to try editing config files. However I encounter 2 problems:

1) There isn't any text editor available (not even vi?!)
2) I tried to install nano just like the terminal but unfortunately it doens't get recognized. The add/remove function only sees the terminal ipkg?!

Okay, which terminal and how

Okay, which terminal and how did you install it?

You should be able to just enter "vi" on the command line and it'll be there.

Are you expecting a GUI for vi? There isn't one on default setup.

Hmmm. Did you solve your editing problems?

Please, if more questions, it helps us a lot in helping you debug if you can post the detailed screen output or a list of the steps you followed when you encountered the problem. At this point, it is not clear if you actually installed the console on your system, or just got the ipk there, ready to install.

For detailed steps about installing software, you might want to refer to the following page:

http://sdjf.esmartdesign.com/ipks/install.html

If any section is unclear or you have information that should be added to help others on that page, let me know.

They are mostly right. You need to install it on your own. I think any will do, actually. Then you can type vi from there.
