So finally, I have my own wifi hot spot at home and I use Opera for the most part. Bad news is that it only takes a few pages to report low on ram. Isn't there a better browser?

Not that I know of. You could try adding swap and/or reducing cache size.

Which version of opera are

Which version of opera are you using? I'm using 7.30, which is the most stable for 2.38 on the sl5500. Quickening likes opera 6.0 for rom 3.1x but I haven't got it to work on my ROM.

Here's some hints of what I do to increase time before the OOM. It may be different for your ROM, but is worth considering.

First, I always have images turned off unless they are essential. They use a lot of memory.

Second, I close all other applications I can before starting Opera, and also clear buffer space before starting. Check free buffer space with the "free" command. Opera will crash faster, at least on my ROM, if there's less than 1200k free buffer space. Try running "free" before and after to see what I mean.

Third, about surfing, I only use Opera when I have to, as lynx is so much faster. links browser is also good, but I find the display in lynx to be more user-friendly.

Fourth, I make liberal use of the dropdown menu in Opera which enables me to close all but the current page I'm on. It looks like a window with 4 panes, and I click on "Close others."

Fifth, to clear buffer space, I run the following before starting Opera:

free;find / -name xxxx; free

That tells me space before and after I run the find command. There are other ways to clear buffer space, but it is my favorite. What works to clear it very much depends on your ROM and what applications and files are on board.

Fifth, you could try tweaking the buffer memory stuff in the /proc/ file system but that's a tricky business, not something I can write about off the cuff.

Does any of this help?

I don't have a 5600, but on my C3100 and Cacko, I can surf all day as long as I have my swap file enabled.
One time I rebooted and forgot to enable swap, then when using opera, I noticed my "memory" meter turned yellow after just 2-3 pages of browsing.
Eventually the meter turned red and I got a popup saying memory is too low.
In Cacko, there is a memory applet that lets you create a swap file.
Look for an applet for the 5600 that allows you to create and enable a swap file.

EDIT:
After doing a lot of reading about the Zaurus version of Opera, I found out that Opera uses cache in memory only. It leaves no cache files on your Zaurus after closing.
It does keep files for "history" and "list of visited URLs"
/home/zaurus/.opera/global.dat (history)
/home/zaurus/.opera/vlink4.dat (list of visited URLs)

True, but swap can help if

True, but swap can help if you want to go that route. It didn't work for me as I still didn't have enough free k in internal memory for intense sites, I think quickening said you need about 4 megs clear, and I need a lot of stuff on board.

The cache also sometimes remains taking up internal memory with some kinds of crashes. Again, it also depends on which version of opera he has.

...written by someone who pushes opera on the z to it's limits, lots of crashing experience. ;)

I find that clearing buffer space makes a world of difference. And, I can sometimes prolong a session without crashing by going out into my console, clearing some buffer space, and then going back to opera.

I use Opera 7.30. I'll try your tips sdjf.

I was just taken aback by the problem. I mean, I have an SL-5600 that's quite the meanest bit of hardware I can take with me on the go, and my mobile phone can surf much better than it. :( And yeah, http web browsing, not wap.

I think it goes without saying that swap will work. I read swap will also kill your disk faster. No thanks.

I don't open images either but that's about as far as I got to optimizing it.

Let us know how it goes. I agree with you about swap, although Quickening seemed to think it's okay to do. I tried swap on a cheapie expendable SD card, and my Z just froze up, IIRC. Not worth pursuing. some day I want a local server I can run via ssh. I thought Firefox was available for the sl5x00's, but it takes a huge amount of space, and SD cards can be soooo slow. I use dialup via CF modem.
